History of the StickMop

     StickMops have to be free or cheap to qualify as a true StickMop. They've probably been in use in many countries for decades. Your author first noticed them in Mexico where they were used to clean the Saltillo type tiles in the hotels and restaurants (please see the Sandra Cisneros la jerga quote on the home page). Sometimes they are known as Cuban Mops.

     Even though Wal-Mart has made inroads into that country, and every little corner tienda and open air market has many varieties of sponge and cloth mops for sale, the StickMop continues to endure. Why? Because it's easy to make and cheap to own and operate. Rich North Americans can afford to put one on every floor of their home!
